Do-It-Yourself Tips

Spyware, viruses, rootkits, and malware are pervasive and can cause irreparable damage to your computer.  Below are some suggested software and basic preventative steps:

  1. Keep your computer up-to-date via Microsoft Updates online (published monthly)
  2. Install and keep antivirus software current, including virus definitions (see list of free products below)
  3. Install and configure Microsoft's Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit
  4. Keep the following programs updated:  Adobe Reader, Adobe Flash, Adobe Shockwave, and Java Client
  5. Regularly scan your computer with antivirus and antispyware software
  6. Use a firewall
  7. Keep backups of all of your critical files
  8. Don't use an administrative Windows account for routine computer use
