Do-It-Yourself Tips

Spyware, viruses, rootkits, and malware are pervasive and can cause irreparable damage to your computer.  The tools below may be helpful in removing these malicious programs.  Also, here are some basic preventative steps:

  1. Keep your computer up-to-date via Microsoft Updates online.
  2. Install and keep antivirus software current, including virus definitions.
  3. Regularly scan your computer with antispyware software.
  4. Use a firewall.
  5. Keep backups of all of your critical files.

Before you proceed you will want to review the Malware Removal Starter Kit document published by Microsoft.  It is a valuable resource that contains detailed instructions on cleaning your system.  Also, Mark Russinovich has a great Advanced Malware Cleaning session at TechNet.
